About the Forest Restoration Project
People and nature meet on the wooded trails of the Village Green. Located in the heart of Kingston, the forest is home to a diverse community of plants and wildlife, nearly a mile of walking trails, and a complex network of streams and wetlands that are essential to protecting water quality in Puget Sound.
More than 70 species of birds have been identified in the woods at the Village Green. The forest also provides habitat for deer, coyote, raccoons, small mammals, bats, reptiles and amphibians. Fish, whales, and shellfish also rely on the woods at the Village Green because a healthy ocean starts with a healthy forest.
But the woods at the Village Green are in trouble. Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, and other invasive plants have formed dense thickets that are smothering native plants, degrading habitat for wildlife and preventing the next generation of trees from growing. Left unchecked, the health of the forest will continue to decline.
In 2024, a volunteer task force came together to develop a plan to restore a native plant community in the woods at the Village Green to ensure that a healthy forest thrives for generations to come. A comprehensive forest restoration plan is currently being developed, which will also include trail improvements and interpretive signage.
Restoring the woods at the Village Green will require the work of many hands. Public work parties will be planned throughout the year and the Village Green invites individuals, groups, and service clubs to join us to accomplish this important work. To learn more contact jenn.e.leach@gmail.com.
